The Decade You Were Born: The 1950's

First rate work and loads of extras
I actually bought (at first) the 1940 one(to see what my parents were like as young folks) -- then got the 50's one since I was a late 50's brat, then the 60's for my early teens and then the 70's for my high school days, and ended up with the 80's for my college daze. The narration, content and music were all impresive in how they were done and they stuck with issues relevant to the social development in a way - that was at NO time, boring. And I'm such a Retro Hound - that this was a real treat. The extra features are great and for over 4 hours of extras PLUS the long documentary ---for the price, there is just no way you can lose out on having these if you are a retro lover or, just curious. Now - I just wish they'd do a 1910 - 1920 - 1930 series, too.

Too Much is Lacking
A lot of time was given to Ford Motors, Coca-Cola and several other large companies of the day. I was bored with the lengthy car commercials.

The biggest thing to any kid born in the fifties was Elvis, yet this production barely mentioned him. The Adventures of Superman wasn't mentioned at all. Superman was an important icon to kids of the 50s, along with Captain Kangaroo, Sheri Lewis and Lambchop, Romper Room, Red Skelton and Lawrence Welk. None of them receive a mention.

This DVD is barely worth the couple of bucks (2.99) I paid for it at the store. I was expecting more social stuff rather than the political and business side of things. What child of the fifties cared about business and politics? We cared about games, birthday parties, music on the radio and playing records. Remember playing the popular Pin the Tail on the Donkey at your friend's slumber parties? No mention of that party staple. No Lawn Jarts either. No mention of roller skates, hopscotch,...

Dissappointing
The video quality is fuzzy. Poor transfer from VHS to DVD. The content could have been better. More informative, less fluff. Barely worth 5 bucks.
