Once Upon A Time In Brooklyn [HD]

Must See - Pick this one up
Action, drama - cars, girls and guns - it's all here. Once Upon a Time in Brooklyn knows what you want in a movie of this genre and definitely delivers. The cast is strong and the writing is sharp. This movie holds no punches, literally, and hits you with a couple of laughs from some clever screenwriters. Bobby's character played by William DeMeo is a tough guy right out of prison struggling with making the choice to go back to the life he knows or make his family proud. High adrenaline from the opening credits to an unexpected twist of an ending this is a movie you don't want to miss and without a doubt one to add to the collection!

I HATE RATS.
Bobby (William DeMeo) gets out of prison after five years for armed robbery. He opts to go after the rats that put him in there. He works for a crime family. He is the son of a well off somewhat honest construction company owner who does not like the mob, but must deal with them. The story is told with flashbacks and flashbacks during flashbacks. It has some first person narration by Bobby, but changes up at will to have some policeman narration.

The film is a gritty look at the crime world filled with connections and favors. Bobby loathes the flamboyant lifestyle of those criminals who flaunt their wealth, but is forced to work with them. Bobby is by no means an honorable person himself, screwing up relationships, sometimes being his worse enemy.

The acting was wonderful, but the plot wasn't solid as if the editor had hiccups. Worth a rental for those for enjoy mafia style crime movies.

Parental Guide: F-bomb, sex, stripper nudity.

Great Movie!!!
I am a fan of Mob Movies and this one directed by Paul Borghese is right on the money!!!! Bought it, loved it, will watch it again

The new "slackers"
If you enjoy Clerks and Slackers and those types of slow dramas about underachievers who are bitter and mean then turn out to have a heart in the end you will love this movie! Personally, I don't.

Watched this cause of Jesse Eisenberg
I had this movie in the watchlist since May 2013 when it came to Amazon(watch while in theaters). I can see why this movie never got a wide release.
I don't see this movie making it in the theaters.
this movie seems like a movie that would be enjoyed by the select few who actually like these type of movies.
The movie was good.
I liked the supporting characters/actors.
The main character was getting on my nerves, after a minute of listening to her talk, I had to tone her out and focus on only the other character she was talking to her.
Just one question though; Who's Mike? (name on the truck)

If I could give it a zero I would
Worse movie...plot was awful, actors were terrible and I want the time I spent watching it back. Thought it would be a humorist story, but def wrong. I shut it off before it even finished...it was awful!

Half a Sixpence

A constant joy
I resent the Amazon reviewer's caustic remarks about the movie, Richard and Steele. This movie was a true delight from beginning to end. The dancing was glorious and lots of it. The songs by this time were old friends. Incidentally, I've heard the cast recordings of the London, Bway and movie versions. A few songs were the same in all 3, others came and went, which I thought was odd. Tommy Steele (35 years ago, can you believe it!) was wonderful as was everyone, it was a little long (2 hours and 25 minutes), but it was always fun and exciting. I loved it. Incidentally, the villains were just nasty enough to get their point across, nothing to enrage you, and their comeuppance was also just right, not some scathing triumph. I found the whole thing a pleasure, just as I did 35 years ago.

Half a Sixpence on DVD--Better Than None
Contrary to what another reviewer has said, Half a Sixpence was a throughly delightful show on stage, at least on Broadway, thanks to a great performance by Tommy Steele, a charming cast, and wonderful choreography by Onna White who went on to do the choreography for the film version of Oliver! The movie version of Sixpence didn't quite have all the charm of the show, but it does have Steele, who gives his all, a touching performance by Julia Foster as Anne, and Grover Dale from the Broadway cast (who would also appear in the Demy film musical The Young Girls of Rochefort. The production values are pleasing to the eye. I'd say one of the flaws of the movie is the unimaginative choroeography by Gillian Lynne (who eventually worked on Cats)--I'm not sure why White wasn't available. The movie includes most of the score of the show, but it cuts one of the show's best songs, Long Ago--it's sung briefly by a chorus at the beginning and is also used as background music but it was an...

Widescreen and Stereo at last!
British entertainer Tommy Steele appeared in three big-budget, reserved seat musicals within a year's time - 1967-1968, and then never made another musical film again. While Steele is one of the only assets in Disney's interminable "The Happiest Millionaire", he was much more well utilized in "Finian's Rainbow" as Og the Leprechaun. But his biggest starring role was in the film that came between those two - the gigantic film version of the stage musical "Half a Sixpence". Directed by George Sidney, the film massively realizes what had been a fairly middle-weight, mediocre stage show. Until this DVD release, the film has never been available on home video in its original Panavision aspect ration, with four track stereo surround. And what a difference this transfer makes from the cropped, grainy VHS tape of the film! Splendidly designed, beautifully shot, elegantly scored, and using both studio sets and sweeping location footage, the film is at least...

John Portman: A Life of Building [HD]

Great Documentary on the Life of This Architect
I am not an Architect by trade, but I have a great love of architecture as an art form. I never knew of John Portman before seeing this and I now have insight to the great contributions this man have made to US commercial architecture and even to global commercial building design. I really loved the way the producers included the family life of Mr. Portman and how he was as a father to his children even with the busy life that he had as both an architect and building commercial real estate developer.

Hit It And Repeat [HD]

Sweet sweet Kandi!
Not-well-known-enough Kandi Buress is my idol (if it's possible for my cynical soul to have one), as the songwriter behind many hits. She started out in a teen group, then segued into the cut-throat world of songwriting, arranging, and producing. She rawwwwwwks hard in the shark-eat-dog world of the music bidness, and has been working behind the scenes for many ears quietly churning out hits and singles for many biggies like Britney, Pink, Aliyah, NSync, etc.

On this show, she gives a makeover (musically and physically) to up and coming artists. I was a little suspicious, because their demos they showed on the show were so excellent, and then they showed up on the show and stunk up the joint. Then she had to work with them on their singing. It seemed to me like that part was faked- so that they could have Kandi "make them over" in the studio. Either that, or these people were REALLY nervous. Because usually, it's actually physically hard for a trained singer to start...

Awesome Show
This show is amazing. Giving people the opportunity to live out their dreams is an inspiration to all aspiring artists. Keep the shows coming.....

It's ok...where are the attractive contestants!
Kandi and her team are pretty amazing. However, contestants don't always make you want to love them. Kandi/producers, please try to find some attractive people that aren't so awkward next season....well, at least the attractive part! Remember the original formula - Kim Z? She had no real singing talent, but her aesthetic and personality were marketable....I am all for the diamond in the rough, but they can't still look like a lump of coal once you shine them up;)

Good movie, but no subtitles
The movie was good even though I don't speak the language they're speaking (I'm assuming it's Korean). Like any action movie, you don't need to understand it to understand the basic premise, though subtitles would have been nice.

Huh??
It appears it may be a good movie, however I wouldn't know because there are no subtitles, THAT SUCKS !!

AMAZON FAIL
Unwatchable.

If you don't speak an Asian language then don't attempt to watch this film (if I knew which one I'd tell you.).

Amazon needs to 1) inform customers of the film's spoken language and 2) offer English subtitles to its English-speaking customers (as any theater in the U.S. would).

So far watching foreign films on Amazon is a hit and miss affair. First one had subtitles this one doesn't. My rating of this movie is directed purely at the Amazon experience.

The Source Family

Amazing documentary about an extraordinary man
I'd never heard of The Source Family until about a year ago when I saw Djin Aquarian play at a show in LA. After the show, a friend of mine filled me in on The Source Family and Father Yod. I didn't know too much more until I watched this documentary today. It's an incredible snapshot in time (1970s Los Angeles) and an extraordinary look into the history of Father Yod and the Source Family. An extremely well composed documentary explaining the evolution of this family using original archival footage, interspersed with interviews of the original members commenting on their time with the family. You're taken on an amazing journey, from the well-meaning spiritual beginnings of Father Yod and the Source Family, to the overblown ego-driven antics of it's leader. It's amazing to hear the stories of the followers of Father Yod and the impact, both constructive and destructive, he had on these people's lives. Ironically, there are many parallels between Father Yod and Jim Jones. It's a...

An Excellent Overview of the 1960's -- 1970's Search for Something Greater
Jim Baker had a big personality and this movie does it justice. The interviews of former Source Family members are priceless. They provide an inside view of what it was like to grow up and live in a cult. I highly recommend this documentary to anyone with interest in communal living experiments and / or the study of alternative religions.

You are your own GURU!
Perfect illustration of why it is dangerous to allow anyone to lead you by your spirituality! Movie is powerful and AWESOME!

Catch-22

"It's the Best There Is!"
Finally ...... one of those DVD re-releases I've been practically holding my breath for, and was not disappointed. This criminally overlooked gem was trashed by critics upon its release in 1970, and never enjoyed a video transfer worthy of the filmmaker's effort, not even on laserdisc! And as you can see from the varying reviews, the controversy rages on. Which just proves how alive and well and timely a film Catch-22 truly is.

Mike Nichols captures the essence of Joseph Heller's defining anti-war classic quite admirably, with a faithful adaptation by Buck Henry (who can be seen along with a veritable Who's Who period ensemble cast), with an eye as removed and objective as Kubrick, yet at times very visually subjective ..... an approach used to great advantage in his previous hit film The Graduate. All the verbal and ethical contradictions of the book bring its dark humor to demented life, through a kaleidoscopic cavalcade of archtypical characters who make up the living...

I love this movie!
Catch-22 is probably my all-time favorite novel and favorite movie. I constantly read reviews of the film version claiming that it doesn't quite reach the level of insanity the novel elevates to and that it is clouded and too literal. I know, there are a lot of things that one just cannot believe are not in the movie, like General Peckem or ex-P.F.C. Wintergreen or Hungry Joe screaming in his sleep whenever he is off combat duty again or Chief White Halfoat waiting to die of pnuemonia and threatening to slit Flume's throat ear ot ear or the chaplain's morbid, introverted struggles or Yossarian censoring letters as Washington Irving. But you can't put EVERYTHING in a movie. I love this movie a lot. I think it sort of becomes its own thing, apart from the novel. Plus, it does bring across the main points and feelings of the novel. In fact, I'm surprised how understandingly Mike Nichols directs and the actors act and the dialogue is executed. Just watch the scene near the...

Good when taken by itself...
If you start comparing this film to the book (which obviously you must do to an extent) you will find so many things wrong with it you will never stop. A good comparison would be Stanley Kubrick's version of "The Shining," which also is very good when taken separate from the book while the book is far superior. Catch-22, the novel, is a brilliant piece of writing that could never be captured on screen, but I think Nichols makes a vallant effort of it. One complaint is the character of Milo is blown out of all proportion, becoming in the film a meglomanical dictator rather than a flagrant opportunist who exploits the men for his "Syndicate." Jon Voight, it must be said, does a good job in this interpretation of Milo.

Parts of the book are notably absent; Orr is barely mentioned until the end, the Glorious Loyalty Oath Crusade, one of my favorite parts, is gone completely and the brutal satire surrounding the Chaplain's life on the base and the doctor...

Dearly Departed

Fantastic Movie, Way To Go Daryl Anka
As much as I have watched and learned from you over the years, this movie ranks at the top. The acting is spot on, the visuals were fantastic, and the overall flow of it was perfect. Having experienced all of this for the past decade myself, all I can say is that for me, this is reality. All the best to you, Mr. Anka, and see you in my dreams.

Will open your eyes!
Dearly Departed was one of the most touching, heart warming, paradigm shifting films I've seen. The truth of the characters and their perspectives is something we can all relate to as much as the circumstances surrounding them. And the seeds of spiritual truth seamlessly woven into the story helps us to remember THE truth and what really matters. I loved this movie and getting to experience it shortly after my father's passing was a blessing I can't express enough thanks for.

Great tool to the after Side!!

The Eyes of Thailand

Brilliant Film
This amazing true story follows a group of dedicated people saving the lives of elephants. They create prostheses for elephants who are injured from land mines. Imagine building a new leg or foot to support an elephant. It is amazing to watch. Soraida's dedication and love for these injured elephants moved my heart and soul. Thank you for the hopeful movie.

A MUST See!
I know Soraida and the work she does at the "FAE" in Thailand. She is a true hero and I do not say that lightly..or often.
There are soooo many out there "claiming" to help elephants but do more harm than good.
So many people have no idea what is going on with the plight of the Asian elephants.
As a former performer with Ringling Brothers Circus (of horrors) I can tell you that the elephants live's here in this Country as well as in their homelands is an ugly and heartbreaking situation.
i have devoted my life to helping them...33 years as of Jan. 2014 to be exact.
Zoos, circuses, the argraian crisis taking place in their homelands, war, illegal logging camps, tourism, Temples...endless list of atrocities that continue to make life HELL for these amazing souls.
Please consider getting involved with helping these gentle giants.
If not..at least do no more harm.
Thank you.

The Eyes of Thailand
"The Eyes of Thailand" is a short documentary film that is really more intended as an intentionally conspicuous film device to make aware the plight of war and its horrible, devastating aftermath on elephants in Thailand. It focuses mainly on poor elephants mutilated by landmines, but it also includes human victims of war.

Elephants are the symbols of Asia, and yet the people there use them as draft animals, slaves, and beasts of burden. They routinely beat them, take away their offspring, and subject them to harsh conditions on logging farms or sell them off to circuses.

Anyone watching this documentary film who does not cry for at least one year, is well, inhumane. If you are prone to suffering, it will be extremely difficult to watch the elephant's leg damage due to landmine explosions.

It also details Soraida Salwala, who founded the first elephant hospital, "Friends of Asian Elephants Hospital" in Lampang, Thailand, who I regard as a saint to...

Love Sick Love

I LOVE YOU NORMAN
The film opens with first person narration from Dori (Katia Winter) who talks about love. She has apparently met Mr. Right in Norman (Matthew Settle). They have an intimate relationship she reads too much into. Norman agrees to a long weekend getaway to a secluded home up north. Here Norman is surprised by Dori's two children and grandparents. Things turn sour after Dori says the dreaded "L" word and we soon see Norman in the tied up condition depicted on the cover.

Dori abides by a relationship book that claims you have to experience all the holidays with each other, which she quickly does in June, with her family considering the odd behavior normal.

This is indeed a quirky film, one for women who have grown tired of bad relationships. It is an impressive indie which oozed with dark comedy and ironic statements. Great date night film.

Parental Guide: F-bomb, sex, brief nudity (Katia Winter)

Grrrrrrrreat
I saw this film at the St. Louis Film Festival and totally enjoyed it from begininng to end. Beautiful young mom finds handsome young partner thought it was going to be a love story, turns out to have it all, love, horror, suspense and comedic chaos. Definitely worth seeing. One of my favorite scenes was when Albert recounts and reminds Norman about the specific profanities he used and how many times he used them.

best "fatal attraction" movie ever!
It is a "fatal attraction" movie with romance, dark comedy and different ending. I know some people won't like it but I loved it.

The Far Horizons

Colourful Historical Adventure
Released theatrically in 1954, "The Far Horizons" is an entertaining film about the Lewis and Clark expedition at the turn of the ninteenth century, a pivotal event in the history of the United States. I suspect that historians will roll their eyes at the "Hollywood" version of this famously long, arduous but important expedition that ultimately ensured that America would reach from "sea to sea". Personally I have no problem with actual events being "enhanced" for the entertainment, as well as the enlightenment, of an audience.

President Thomas Jefferson (avuncular Herbert Heyes) has just completed the massive Louisiana Purchase deal with Napoleon, greatly expanding the territory of the United States. However, this vast area now needs to be explored and mapped. The President decides that his loyal secretary, Meriwether Lewis (steadfast Fred MacMurray), is the man for the job, along with a soldier experienced in fighting Indians, William Clark (a driven, intense Charlton...

Good Movie!
I realize that this movie is not completely accurate and that a Native American did not play the part of Sacajawea, but I thought it played out well because it gave us a clear idea of some of the circumstances that led up to and possibly happened during this arduous journey west. The scenery was beautiful. My daughter is reading a book about Sacajawea and it opened her eyes to many interesting events in history. One of them being how the Indians lived and their devotion to the land was very apparent. I am very happy to have purchased this movie and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to understand this part of history better. You may want to read about this part of history first, like we did, so that you can separate fact from fiction.

Memories
Enjoyed seeing the movie "Far Horizons" again. Watched part of it filming in Jackson Hole country back in 1954. Nice to have it on DVD.

Jake Shimabukuro: Life on Four Strings

Playing Film Festivals now- On DVD in July 2013
I saw this film yesterday at the WXPN Music Film Festival in Philadelphia (coordinated by the Philadelphia Film Society). It is making the round of film festivals now and is due on DVD in July 2013.
I've followed ukulele prodigy Jake Shimabukuro's career of 11 years now (from his early albums with a band). Now he goes it alone and can hold an audience of 3,000 or more for two hours with just his "jumping flea" (English translation of the word "ukulele). Watching this 58-minute film, made in 2011 and released in 2012, I still learned new things about Jake. We get to see his mother and brother as well as his new wife and his now-former manager, Kaz Flanagan. He's a father now but his son was born after the film was completed. Luckily Jake was filmed throughout his long career (he's only in his early 30s but started playing at age four.) and a lot of that footage was used by the filmmakers.

If you know Jake and his music you'll really enjoy this film (I loved it!) and if...

Great musical talent, beautiful documentary
I saw the film on PBS this afternoon and was moved, enriched and entertained by it. I was familiar with Jake's music and have appreciated the way he can get wonderful feeling out of what others might consider a very limited instrument. He can create exquisite lyrical statements....his version of George Harrison's While My Guitar Gently Weeps is justly famous.....join the millions who've seen the YouTube version shot in New York's Central Park. In this documentary we learn about the Hawaii and family environment he emerged from, his special relationship with a Japanese woman who is his business manager and his romance and ultimate marriage to his wife. Extremely moving is Jake's visit to his business manager's home city in Japan which was devastated by the tsunami.

An incredible look at one of the world's most virtuosic musicians
Jake Shimabukuro is not a "ukulele player" -- he's a world-renowned musical virtuoso who blows away anyone who hears his music. He is in the same pantheon as Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Bela Fleck, and even great classical musicians such as Yo-Yo Ma and Hilary Hahn. Jake, more than any musician I know of, transcends his instrument and creates pure music, touching the souls of his listeners.

A well-kept (though award-winning) Hawaiian and Japanese secret until 2006, Jake burst upon the world stage when someone posted the now-famous video of him playing "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" on YouTube. The video instantly went viral, and Jake became a international star, receiving concert requests from around the world, and playing with and opening for such stars as Jimmy Buffett, Bela Fleck, Ziggy Marley, and Bette Midler, and being produced by Alan Parsons.

All while retaining his youthful humility and disarming openness and lack of pretense. This movie is a lovely look...

Love showing to my Physics Class
These videos are GREAT to show to any science class, especially Physics! The experiments are very entertaining, and the explanations are fantastic!

Fun way to introduce people to science!
This show takes popular and amazing video clips and explains how it happens.

Guys flipping over speeding cars, a kid getting a video of the edge of space with a balloon, becoming Darth Vader using sulfur hexaflouride (opposite effect from helium), synchronized mini quad propeller flying vehicles, and even blending an ipad!

I admit I like science already, and typically know most of the science on your typical science shows (I still love them), but this is taking things that are popular in youtube and such, and as such, vary greatly from the typical topics of science shows.
This allows for it to be entertaining AND educational.

I highly recommend this! I cant wait for more episodes myself.

Very entertaining science show
I find this show very entertaining. They point out 20 "Outrageous Acts" in each episode and take a look at them from scientific view points. Entertainment with some education hidden in the background.

The Bake Street Hauntings

Slightly above average indie horror
I felt I had to rent this and write a review, considering that at least one of the reviews already on here was written by a cast member. I have seen just about every haunted house and found footage film available, and most of them are complete crap. I'm happy to say that this one bucks the trend and is actually not horrible. Still, I wouldn't say that it's good, but it seems to be an achievement to make an indie horror flick that's simply tolerable.

The movie is very short - just 70 minutes - which makes it great as a short diversion. However, it also leaves little room to develop characters or a plot. As a result, both end up being wafer thin and easily forgettable. Even the house, which used to be the main character in any haunted house story, as well as the ghosts themselves, have taken supporting roles in a movie that really stars a few good haunt scenes. Thankfully, these scenes are the movie's real strong points, and I dare say that some of them were creepy. I...

Don't waste your time
I was hoping for the best, but this movie disappointed so badly that I made a point of going online to review it--something I've never been motivated to do before, but I'd hate for someone else to waste their time like we did. You don't need a big budget to make a scary movie, but you do need a story. This had nothing but a bare bones idea that they never did a thing to develop. The scares were few and far between and lame as hell. It was one of those movies where you're constantly going, "No one would do that" or "Why don't they just turn on the lights?" So flipping stupid.

Better than expected!
I am a fairly critical reviewer of horror, primarily because today it is so inexpensive (both in time and money) for most anyone to create a movie and upload it to Amazon and elsewhere, that there is a glut of absolutely terrible "films" on the market today (and I think that now that genie is out of the bottle, so this is the new reality of the horror movie genre). Anyway, suffice to say that I have spent a lot of my meager disposable income on streaming movies here on Amazon and on Netflix, with very few real creepy and spooky moments to show for it - especially with regard to "lost footage" films which are the most conducive to those no/low budget movies I mentioned. So it was with no small amount of surprise when I found myself genuinely creeped out by The Bake Street Hauntings. I won't give any spoilers here, and while this movie is not perfect, it makes up for its shortcomings (one big one being wayyy too many F-bombs - OH and the chemistry between the "husband" and "wife" is...

funny film
I enjoyed filming the move with every one and it was great working with the stars of the movie too.

HILARIOUS!!!!
This movie was hilarious! It reminded me of the original Friday (with Chris Tucker and Ice Cube). The plot was simple and straightforward (but with an interesting twist)! Two guys get a new job as wait-staff in a new restaurant. The restaurant ensemble is itself a great cast with great actors. And of course: Any movie that can be analogized to Friday has to have plenty of weed jokes!

All round, I'd highly recommend this movie.

Accident

What is an Accident?
Accident...you never know when...you never know how. But what if it's all intentional?

A hitman kills people by engineering flawless, untraceable "accidents." He practices extreme care and skill leaving no evidence and suspicion. Worse, he appears like any ordinary person in Hong Kong. But despite this, he is an extremely fearful young man. This film follows the shrewdness but also paranoia of such a lonely person. Unlike most straightforward films, Accident features a rare concoction of action and psychology. To protect himself, the hitman suffers a life of isolation. This ponders the thought process and pain inside his head. To express that, the film amplifies lighting, vision, and sound. Shadows focus on the mood. All the angles shoot with constant voyeurism. And little dialogue is exchanged, but everyday sounds are amplified. This all complements the constant tension and fear of detection despite the hitman's anonymity. However, you'll deeply appreciate how the...

Heroes Del Norte: Segunda Temporada

Still the funniest series on TV!
I was a little wary with the second season of this absolutely hilarious Mexican tv series. Could they top the first season, or would they already run out of ideas? To recap the previous season: a group of motley characters, all with musical ambitions but different backgrounds, form a grupero band and after many (hilarious) situations, become the number one sensation in Mexico and hit the big time. But with fame and fortune also come... taxes, which even with all the money they've made, they would never be able to pay back in a million years, so they do the best they can in a situation like that; they've got to disappear with a bang!

The second season opens when we learn that our favorite grupero band has crashed in their private plane, and only one member of the band survived: Zaca, the lead vocalist. All of Mexico mourns our dead heroes, and what ensues is the biggest funeral ever attended in Mexico since Pedro Infante's death (actually most of the footage shown is from...

Torment

Indie Horror Worth A Look
Torment is a low-budget horror film from director Steve Sessions. I played a supporting role in the film as one of the victims so I may be a little biased in my review.

For the budget it had, the movie looks great. Suzi Lorraine pulls off a convincing portrayal of a woman who falls deeper and deeper into a world of a serial killer offing locals which may or may not be actually happening. Until her husband (Tom Stedham) is murdered, then what was thought to be all in her head becomes a living nightmare.

This has all the classic elements of a psychological slasher film. The final half hour really kicks into gear and is a non-stop thrill ride until the very end.

For such a small cast, I can assure you there is a high body count. This film uses the "torture porn" aspect but those scenes are pretty low key and not too disturbing.

Rent it or buy it when it comes out. All who were involved worked extremely hard on it and had an awesome time making...

Absolute Crap
Do not waste your time with this movie. If it were free it would not be worth your time. Poorly filmed, terrible sound quality, poor acting and terrible screen play. Should be able to to give it zero stars. Actually caused nausea and abdominal cramps watching this movie. I felt like I had food poisoning after watching this movie.

TORMENT rocks!!!
This movie was a lot of fun to make. Suzi is a great actress, and willing to help others when they need it. I didn't get to work with some of the cast members, so I had to watch the movie to see their great performances.

The opening scene, where the evil clown tortures --- oh; I have to stop. I don't want to give anything away. Let me just say that watching Jade Lafont get tortured to death sets the tone right away for the rest of the movie. This is one sick clown!

And I'm warning everyone now, there are some really, REALLY big roaches in the movie. I know that some people are freaked out by clowns. But when I saw these giant cockroaches crawling across the floor... Ew[...]

It seems like a lot of "directors" are making low-budget horror movies these days. TORMENT is one you should make the effort to see.

And it will be shown at OMEGACON, the huge sci-fi convention in Birmingham, AL March 14-16. Suzi Lorraine is a featured guest there. Come...

Red Widow: The Complete First Season

Brilliant so far!
Let me preface this by saying it seems lots of critics trash this show based solely on the fact that it's written by Melissa Rosenberg, who also happened to pen the screenplays for the Twilight franchise. Apparently that is grounds for the show's premise to be instantly labeled as as "contrived" and "misguided." Perhaps the show is too female-centric to score many points with the male majority critics, but I find the concept appealing and very watchable.

Marta Walraven (nee Petrov)'s life is turned upside down by her husband's violent death, the consequences of his shady business partnership with her brother, Irwin, and their longtime friend, Mike. She inherits the fallout in the form of a large (and temporarily missing) shipment of stolen cocaine and a Romanian mob boss named Schiller seeking compensation for his stolen shipment in the form of her unwilling employment as his import/export handler for smuggled drugs and guns. Thus she is dragged back...

Great entertainment!
Happy to see broadcast TV coming out with solid competition to those horrific reality shows. Red Widow is a great ride, well-acted with a nice twist -- Russian mob instead of the same old Mafia tale! And the chemistry between Marta and Schiller is palpable!! So I'm sure ABC will cancel (programming decisions make zero sense these days) and we'll just have this first season to view over and over again.

Red Widow Season 1
Great show! Can't say enough good things about it. Never having watched it before, I caught the finale on TV and had to go back to watch the series in its entirety, even after I knew how it ended. It's a nice balance of suspense, romance, drama, and action without being predictable. The script is well written and doesn't insult the intelligence. The story revolves around a woman who is drawn into the criminal world through the actions of her family as she struggles to find a way to cut her ties to it while keeping her family safe. I enjoyed all the subplots and the characters were well developed. If you like Revenge, you will like this show, which in my opinion completely surpasses that soap opera melodrama. Unfortunately, I understand ABC canceled the series, but even so, the show wraps up nicely by the 8th episode.

The Tonys

Capturing the Beauty of Broadway
I loved this show to death. Broadway is such an incredible thing for me. It's so alive and it was so thrilling to have a show that celebrated that. Not only through original musicals, but by showcasing Broadway talents like Megan Hilty, Christian Borle, Jeremy Jordan and even having work by Joe Iconis. All the cameos from Broadway actors was just a great treat.

This show had flaws. There were ridiculous characters and just stupid, awfully written story lines. People were fired, including the show's creator, Theresa Rebeck. There was a lot of fire tossed around between the creative team, which eventually led to its downfall. NBC also played their hand stupidly with this show by not marketing it correctly and constantly just leaving it behind. It's a shame, really. There was a lot of buzz for this show and what it was going to be. I can only imagine what this show could've been if it weren't for such a rocky two seasons behind the production and NBC.

Regardless, we...

Bummer
I love SMASH, I love the characters and I love the story line. I hate that it has been cancelled I can only hope that the two hour finale next week is amazing and closes all the gaps. I don't want to be left hanging. Hopefully since they knew ahead of time that they were being cancelled the writers have had more time to make it spectacular. Can't wait to see what Megan Hilty and Katherine McPhee do after SMASH. I am really going to miss Debra Messing in a sitcom also things haven't been the same since Will and Grace left television. This show would have done much better on a different network I am sure. If Glee can stay on as long as it has then what is the problem with SMASH? Well it seems like a network issue to me and not enough marketing I didn't even hear about it during the first season, I was told about it from and employee at the start of Season 2.

Sorry its gone
I really loved this show, thought it had excellence and am sorry its canceled. Back to boring Reality shows, I guess.

Team Umizoomi: Animal Heroes

Adorable Animals!
From the first time we watched Team Umizoomi, I knew it was a show I definitely wouldn't mind my kids watching. The show is first off so colorful and features adorable little main characters that I knew my kids would want to watch it. Second though is the educational benefits from it. The show teams teamwork, patterns, shapes, and numbers. This particular DVD features 91 minutes of Team Umizoomi adventures and it is broken down into four episodes.

Purple Monkey Mission
Buster the Lost Dog
Cuckoo Bears
Animal School House!

As you can probably tell from the names of the episodes and the DVD, this title is all about animals. Each episode has an animal that the Umizoomi help and it was adorable to see all these episodes on one DVD. While these are episodes that have been on television, I don't think we had seem any of them previously. The animation is super adorable and the music gets my kids excited and moving.

I received this title...

Bought for grandson
My grandson is 4 years old and loves Team Umizoomi. We have all of the DVDs and ordered this one when we saw it. He of course loves it. I love that it keeps his interest and he has learned much over the last couple of years that he has been watching these videos. He loves math and this is great for teaching some basic math skills.

Love this show!
My 3 y/o son LOVES umizoomi and we watch it constantly! GREAT educational show for young children to see. Highly recommend!

Dorfman in Love

EXACTLY what the world needs now ... is love, sweet Dorfman in Love!
I loved "Dorfman in Love". It was inspiring, uplifting and I left the theater feeling happier and more hopeful! Not enough movies do that these days and I'm grateful for the wonderful story, the great direction and the touching, dead-on performances! Elliott Gould is a legend, and once again, he gives us a magnetic performance that pulls you right into the Dorfman family. Sara Rue is sure to be a big star! Sara was so believable in her performance and the script was so real, that I wondered how could writer Wendy Kout have known so much about my life?! Only wish I would meet a guy like Haaz! ;) I will see this movie, again and again, anytime I need to smile, laugh and feel stronger and more confident in my own life journey. As an LA teen, back in the day, I'm so excited to see what is happening to downtown LA and I applaud this movie, for it's heartfelt story within a city that is finally getting the love it needs! Love the revitalization of downtown LA, Love this story and...

Enjoyable and moving
Every now and then I run across a film that moves me to the point where I get a lump in my throat and my eyes tear up...but I also laugh out loud at parts. That film is TOUCH. It is a perfect blend of drama with humor kicked in at appropriate times. This film is a real joy to watch! I highly recommend watching TOUCH. It is expertly directed and the cast is terrific. Bubble Guppies: Sunny Days!

Six Fun Episodes from a Great Show!
My girls (ages 3 and 6) love the Bubble Guppies and we have a ton of the episodes on our DVR, including all of the episodes from this DVD. They are always requesting the show. The show is great for its vivid colors and fun songs. It always has a positive message and teaches kids about a variety of things and occupations. You will probably find yourself with the catchy songs stuck in your head. The going outside song is the best.

This DVD contains six great Summer and Vacation Themed episodes. Amazon doesn't always do a good job on their DVD episode listings so here are the episodes that are included on this DVD:
1. The Beach Ball! - Beach episode where Sandy wants to become the Queen of the Beach Ball.
2. The Legend of Pinkfoot - The Guppies go camping and hear a campfire story about the Legendary Pinkfoot!
3. Bring on the Bugs - The kids learn about all kinds of bugs. The "Buggin' Out" song in this one is really cute.
4. The Sizzling Scampinis! - A...

Love Them All!
My granddaughter is completely in love with bubble guppies. They present different situations in the most fun and non-scary way. They did an episode on "fairy tales" where the big bad wolf, jack's giant and the three bears were all nice and helpful. The wicked witch was even handled beautifully. They make learning fun and very educational. Different jobs, situations, terrific moral of "never judge a book by its cover" and sharing are stressed. The music is cute and the dancing is good exercise for her.

Bubble Guppies: Sunny Days
My daughter LOVES the Bubble Guppies. I bought this to keep in the car for long car rides. It has 2 hours of episodes, so it keeps her entertained for a while. Nuf said!

Okamikakushi Complete

Not bad at all-- it's good, but not amazing.
Ryukishi07, the creator of this series, is known for creating series with mystery and horror that messes with your mind. Consequently, a lot of the hate that this series receives comes from fans of his work that expected something of the same caliber as Higurashi (a.k.a. When They Cry) and Umineko, previous works of his. The fact that this has a TV-14 rating and only 12 episodes (the last of which is actually more of an extra episode) should be a hint that this won't be on the same level. It *is* a horror mystery, but it doesn't mess with your mind nearly as much. That doesn't mean it's not enjoyable, though. It just means that Okamikakushi is a bit different from what he's known for.

Fans of Higurashi will notice a few similarities between it and Okamikakushi. The setting is a village, there's something that can make the residents (or at the very least, some of them) act berserk-- a dam even gets involved in both of them. Perhaps some of these things were done as a nod...

Okamikakushi
a young brave boy changes her way of life from killing to stopping completely and letting someone else take over! Life is precious and i thank this brave boy for changes her heart even though he was scared he told her face to face how much better her life and all the people of the village could join together as one and get along... i faced a new awakening to what kindness in the face of extreme odds can change from a heart of concern for all! Wonderful! i hope everyone will taste this realization and try it out? i enjoyed it with every fiber of my being.

Ookami Kakushi
Ookami Kakushi is an alright show. Its sad, happy, and angry. It has a happy ending (thank god), at first I thought it was going to have a crappy ending; However, I was hopping for more towards love/romance in this anime. Here is a link to a web-sight for this anime in case you want to buy it after words.

For my recommendation DON'T BUY IT!!!

Cunning Little Vixen

EXTRAORDINARY!
I guess I've been a Dickensian since I first read 'Pickwick Papers' at about the age of 11. I've read all he wrote--strangely the last novel I got to was the one most Americans are required to read in school: 'A Tale of Two Cities'--and I've never lost my fondness for the novels and short stories. I recognize the sentimentality that runs through his work, but as I specialized in Victorian sources when I was a reader for the Oxford English Dictionary and sometimes think I feel more at home in that era than in our own, that never bothered me. I cried at Little Nell's death just as Dickens's contemporary readers did.

I was thrilled, then, to see this 3 DVD collection of Dickensiana, produced by BBC (and partly by WGBH) for television. It is, quite simply, extraordinary. It contains, on DVD 1, a three hour quasi-documentary about Dickens's life, 'Uncovering the Real Dickens.' It is lushly filmed and makes use of current actors taking the roles of people from Dickens's life, saying the...

Macbeth - The Film starring Jason Connery

Of the Scots, for the Scots.
This is Macbeth of the Scots, for the Scots. Purists will really like the authenticity of this interpretation as well as the refreshingly naturalistic style of acting. Jason Connery of Robin of Sherwood fame (and we won't mention a famous father) is pleasingly gritty and real while his Lady Macbeth is luscious and driven as LadyMac should be. They are supported by a cast of true scots- a good thing. Students seem to appreciate the understated style and real locations. There is a companion documentary which examines the themes and issues in a way that is not the least bit dry- a feat indeed. 'Screw your courage to the sticking place' and watch enthralled.

The Good, The Bad, and the Puzzling
The good news is that this feature is not the worst Macbeth production I've seen. As many of you may know, to date, the quintessential Macbeth has not been produced. But, in searching for a version that may be appropriate for my high school students either to be shown as a whole or in part, this one does pass some qualifications. Though some scenes are shortened and others left out, the basic heart of the play is intact. I believe the acting, cinematography, and pace of plot are sufficient to keep most students engaged, at least for the short term. Nevertheless, one negative is that the actor's soliloquies are most often done as voiced over thoughts rather than spoken words, much like the Orson Wells version. Unlike the Polanski version, this one doesn't strike me as being challengeable as inappropriate for students since there are no naked witches or gratuitously and over the top gory scenes. That's not to say, however, there are no scenes of war, sword play, and bloody death. True...

I wish it were in a playable format
The film is set in the appropriate century and adheres pretty well to the Shakespearean text (although with considerable cuts from the play near the end of the film). I also believe that this film presents the best "Is this a dagger I see before me?" soliloquy I have seen on stage or in film. Macbeth goes into a chapel to pray silently (as he tormented with his intention to kill King Duncan), kneels before a cross, and then is presented with the inverted (perverted) shadow of the cross on the ground before him when the winds beat open the window and the moonlight comes cascading in behind the cross. Macbeth, seeking spiritual strength, instead sees the image of an inverted cross before him on the ground, and asks, "Is this a dagger I see before me?" This method of having Macbeth see a dagger is much better than the floating or imaginary daggers of other presentations in film and on stage that present Macbeth as a lunatic too early in the play. This scene alone draws me to the...

Best Laid Plans [Blu-ray]

Does coca cola really irritate your sinuses?
This film was much better than I expected. I was expecting some mediocre teen movie but this is stunning. A great simple story: a couple try to rip someone off to pay back a debt. What could be simpler? How about when everything goes wrong? Do not want to give anything away but this story had a great and unexpected twist. The build up is very convincing and even when you think the story is going down one alley, it doesn't.

Reese Witherspoon and Alessandro Nivola are wonderful as the lovers trying to get out of Tropico: a dead end town and Josh Brolin does a convincing job as a hysterical up and coming yuppie who thinks he has committed the ultimate crime.

There are plenty of magic elements: the economics-major thug professing Adam Smith as a justification for violence, Nivola's way of avoiding a TV advert giving the game away and the cause of the brushfire are just three.

Watch this and enjoy the treat and if you see it on DVD see if you agree that the alternate...

The ending alone makes the movie
Well, I think that thrillers often get a little overdone. Anyone who watches many movies will probably agree. I felt like this movie was one movie that stayed believable, yet still kept the audience enthralled in the storyline.

This movie started off kind of slow, which may irk some of the viewers who want to get into it. However, this movie had one of the best and unpredictable endings in a thriller I've ever seen. This alone made the movie worth it.

I thought the young actors, notably Reese Witherspoon, were admirable in their roles. There was not really any bad acting in this movie. The script was well founded, and I thought that this was an original and creative idea.

Many of the twists of the movie are explained through characters actions rather than overt telling of plot sequences. This is a movie that starts a bit of a ways in, then retraces its steps, and then continues on through the movie.

If you are a moviegoer that enjoys twists and unpredictable endings, then...

Fabulous
This film illistrates the human desire for freedom. A man (Nivola) has fallen in a hole and he needs cash fast. His girfriend (Witherspoon) goes to the extremes to dig him out. This is Witherspoons finest role yet. She takes you deep inside her characters mind and shows how love and compassion direct the character through her toughest decisions. Lissa (witherspoon) and her boyfriend (Nivola) need to get out of this town- find out what they will do to do so.

Mermaids: The New Evidence [HD]

Must Watch!
This video is awesome, please watch the first one before you watch this one! Beautifully created and very insightful! I enjoyed every minute of it and the ending left me wanting to see so much more! Mermaids are real!

Some people don't seem to realize this is a work of fiction...
People who actually believe this is a real documentary are deluding themselves. It's a work of fiction made purely for entertainment...

That said it's a really good work of fiction. Provides a good story to lose yourself in for an evening like a good book.

Mermaids are real?!?!
My students came to me this summer to tell me that mermaids are real. They were so sincere that I had to look into what they were talking about to be able to explain why the mermaids in this "documentary" were not real. So I watched it myself. I shook my head with disbelief watching closely at the interviewing being done by Animal Planet. They never explained that what people were watching was anything but a real documentary and I could see why my students (and their parents) were so convinced. I finally went to snopes.com to see what they had to say. There, some very upset scientists had written in and said that in order to see that Animal Planet admitted the "documentary" was indeed a fake, you had to read the credits. Very sneaky! Animal Planet had unapologetically printed on fast rolling credits "none of the individuals or entities depicted in the film are affiliated or associated with it in any way, nor have approved its contents. Any similarities to actual persons...

A Good Day To Die

American History Fundamental
When all is said and done, the stories of the Native American freedom movement contain all the courage that makes for true heroism. This film captures the spirit of those who began the American Indian Movement and turbulent times that they struggled in. Filled with newsreel clips and historic photos and video, this is a very balanced telling of the events that defined the Native American civil rights movements of the 60's and 70's. Though focused on Dennis Banks, many other leaders from the movement are included here, too.
This is a must see film for any student of history, American or otherwise.

Thumbs up
A Good Day to Die is a documentary about Native American activist Dennis Banks and the American Indian Movement (AIM). It covers the difficulties facing Native people in the 1970's and the ways in which Dennis Banks, among others, led AIM to take a stand against injustice. The film touches on Banks' early life, the founding of AIM and its many acts, including: petitioning Washington, D.C., Custer South Dakota, and the occupation of Wounded Knee.
I would say the purpose of this film is to provide some historical context and to inspire people, native and non-native, alike, to be brave enough to make a difference. This film shows the plight of urban Indians and shows the way their people, specifically Dennis Banks, rose up to take a stand. This film provided almost entirely native voices, which I think is important, because rarely do Native peoples get to explain their own history. They did include a few with opposing opinions, but it was clear who was in control of the...

Paul Taylor Dance Company in Paris

Two Taylor dance pieces from 1998 and 2008 plus a 10-minute featurette
This 55 minute DVD contains a 2012 performance of two important Paul Taylor works created 10 years apart, presented in Paris and filmed by New York's PBS station WNET. Each of the pieces - 1988's "Brandenburg's" and 2008's "Beloved Renegade" ( Taylor's tribute to poet Walt Whitman) runs about 25 minutes. They are performed on a stage with no scenery and the camerawork includes both wide-angle and close-up shots. The dancers are - as Taylor's always are - incredible.

There is a 10-minute "bonus featurette" "Paul Taylor: Architect of Energy" which features comments by both Taylor and his featured dancers. They discuss the two pieces on the DVD. There are French subtitles for the featurette - which is in English.)

I'm sure Taylor fans (of which I count myself as one) will enjoy this DVD.

I hope you found this review both informative and helpful.

"Anything Phonographic"

Absolutely Ravishing Dancing on Film
While I have seen and very much enjoyed live performances of the Paul Taylor Dance Company, I simply wasn't prepared for the absolute beauty, or the mesmerizing and hypnotizing quality that this film miraculously manages to capture. Of particular note is the thrilling choreography and the extraordinary dance performance level revealed in "The Brandenburgs" to the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, but "Beloved Renegade" performed to the music of Francois Poulenc is also completely remarkable. What an utter joy and complete treat to behold!

UFC 157...
UFC 157 was an event in time that will long be remembered for its best reasons. First off, UFC had its first women's fight and to boot they made it the headlining fight of the night. Let's face it, some fans may have been suspicious but think back to when EliteXC has its "Destiny" event (wow, feels like a long time ago now) and Gina Carano fought Julie Kedzie on the main card. So many fans were worried about a women's fight then and look at history now, that event isn't remembered mostly for the fights by the men on the card, it's remembered for the Carano/Kedzie fight which was fireworks. Now, it was UFC's turn at making history and in a big way.

Robbie Lawler was making his UFC return after being away for over 8 years. Those of us that can remember him can recall a Welterweight who had absolute dynamite in his hands but his time in the UFC ended after two defeats. He's kept busy since leaving fighting in the other organizations but most fans today will remember him...
